I have an idea it's because you're not networking but interacting two AREVs. It's sort of like Novell where, if you try and just copy out of a file (a read operation) it can corrupt the source file.
I think Steve Smith, Andrew McAuley or Aaron Kaplan will probably answer this either more completely or with a different answer.
If no one has any input on this by tomorrow, I will send it out in the website email this weekend.
